The Grassmarket Mission is a charity dedicated to getting alongside people who are poor, marginalised, excluded, homeless, struggling with addiction or mental illness. Our ethos is based around trying to meet people’s needs both physically and spiritually.
We run a drop-in service five times a week providing meals and conversation, advice and community all free of charge. Through the meals we try to offer a nutritious and varied menu with items consisting of homemade soup, sausage casserole, mince and tatties, prawn curry, etc... We make a special emphasis on fresh fruit and veg though we’re not averse to offering the odd pie or cream cake! We try and provide a safe and comfortable environment where people can meet and feel relaxed, community can be built, and social networks can be formed breaking the cycle of loneliness and isolation. We also offer An art class on Fridays where service users and volunteers get together to be creative. We are in the process of opening GROW our wood workshop which will both teach joinery skills and provide a vocational outlet for service users. Here we attempt to blur the lines between volunteer and user and are always seeking out more of both
Offering people an opportunity to genuinely integrate as part of a team, as a volunteer, through cooking classes, woodwork, hill walking, art and more. It is our experience that many of our service users struggle to find purpose and meaning in their lives. Often chaotic, their lives lack a framework, a structure which gives it meaning and shape. These opportunities for people to get involved and gain skills offer a real long term opportunity to build community and make a transition that will offer them a new start.
Over the next few years the work of The Grassmarket Mission will form the basis of a new project, The Grassmarket Community Project. As we begin rolling out pilot projects we are continually realising that there is the potential for much more. Soon we will be starting the construction of a new purpose built centre containing a drop-in centre/cafe, workshop rooms, community space, an arts venue, offices and social housing. In partnership with Greyfriars Tolbooth and Highland Kirk, Hillcrest Housing Association and Edinburgh Cyrenians, The Grassmarket Mission will be at the forefront of this dynamic and original vision.
