The Grassmarket Mission

The Grassmarket Mission is a Christian mission and a registered charity dedicated to getting alongside people who are poor, marginalised, excluded, homeless, struggling with addiction or mental illness. Our ethos is based around trying to meet people’s needs, not only immediate needs, but long term needs, both practical and spiritual. We aim not just resolve crisis, but to build community.

What we do

We provide up to six meals a week, all free of charge, staffed by volunteers. We try to offer a nutritious and varied menu, homemade soup, sausage casserole, mince and tatties, an emphasis on fresh fruit and veg and we’re not averse to offering the odd pie or cream cake! We provide a safe and comfortable environ, where people can meet and feel relaxed, where community can be built, where social networks can be formed, where the cycle of loneliness and isolation can be broken. We also offer spiritual guidance, prayer, bible study, friendship.

Other things we do

Offering people an opportunity to genuinely integrate as part of a team, as a volunteer, through cooking classes, woodwork, hill walking or more. It is our experience that many of our service users struggle to find purpose and meaning in their lives. Often chaotic, their lives lack a framework, a structure which gives it meaning and shape. These opportunities for people to get involved offer a real long term opportunity to make a transition that will offer them a new start.

Future plans.

Over the next two years we hope that the work of The Grassmarket Mission will form the basis of a new project, The Grassmarket Community Project. As we have rolled out pilot projects over these past couple of years, the cooking classes and the woodwork, we have realised that there is the potential for much more. We plan to begin construction in the Autumn of 2007 of a new purpose built centre containing a soup kitchen, workshops, community space, an arts venue, offices and social housing. In partnership with Greyfriars Tolbooth and Highland Kirk, Hillcrest Housing Association and Edinburgh Cyrenians, The Grassmarket Mission will be at the forefront of this dynamic and original vision.
