The Grassmarket Mission was founded in 1885 and had a mission hall on the Grassmarket, in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, right in the heart of the Old Town. From that mission hall the local community was served both spiritually and practically for many years.
As time went by the Grassmarket Mission evolved into a work specifically aimed towards people in need, it addressed issues of poverty, hunger, loneliness and homelessness as well as ministering to those who had problems with substance abuse, typically alcoholics and street drinkers.
In recent years we have moved from that mission hall to Greyfriars Kirkhouse, at the foot of Candlemaker Row (86), just on the junction of the Grassmarket and the Cowgate. We are a registered charity, staffed mainly by over 100 volunteers, some of whom come in for two hours a month, others give up 20 hours a week. We maintain a Christian witness, not only in word, but also in deed, using Jesus’ relationships with marginalized and excluded people as our example and inspiration.
