The Grassmarket Mission has a proud and impressive history of working with impoverished people in the centre of Edinburgh. We have an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of many people, people who are struggling, people who need help.
Many of our volunteers are genuine altruists and those who support our work are genuine philanthropists, they have no motivation beyond that sense of love for fellow man. Others, myself included are driven by our faith and undertake the work as a response to the love God showed us in sending Jesus to meet our needs. I am enthused and inspired by the way Jesus meets the needs of the people around him, the leper, the hungry, the widow, the Samaritan, Jesus fills the gaps in the lives of those who ask him, ultimately Jesus fills the gap between us and God caused by our sin and restore us to Him as well as to ourselves and those around us. As a result of this our work is naturally evangelistic, it is outreaching in it’s nature, it reflects Jesus and so brings him to the fore. However, whilst I make no apologies for the work being rooted in Christian theology and faith I stress that it is absolutely not done with any agenda. To work in this way and expect or demand some kind of response from the people we are getting alongside would be fake, it would be fraudulent, a sham. I believe that Jesus too made no demands on the people he helped, sometimes he healed people who were unaware of who he even was. (John 5, the man at the pool at Bethesda for example).
The help we give is unconditional, like the love Jesus shows us, it does not depend on the recipient doing anything other than accepting what is offered.
