Greyfriars Recycling Of Wood

In the spring of 2006 we finally began our woodwork project after a couple of years of stopping and starting and some disappointments. Using two converted portacabins situated at the bottom of Greyfriars Kirkyard, the historic final resting place of Greyfriars Bobby, we started to recycle old church pews and other unwanted old wood.

Pew and Mirror

Although it seems that pews are no longer the vogue for the interior of church buildings, refurbished and restored to the specifications of the buyer, they are a sought after and sellable commodity. A small group of keen volunteers, both service users of The Grassmarket Mission and members of the local community, led by Tommy Steele, are developing a small community enterprise, making planters, bird tables, bird boxes and larger bespoke items, furniture, frames and pews.

Bird Boxes

From original, often antique, stock this band of social entrepreneurs are developing, not just the goods, not just the business, not just the enterprise, but themselves. The pictures here are a small sample of the things they produce and are available for sale. The team are also available to undertake any work they are commissioned to do.

If you would like details of what we can make, would like to view some of the products or would like to order some furniture, (we make everything from small monks seats, garden benches, frames for mirrors, seats, bird tables and boxes, planters for the garden, almost anything you could wish for!) get in touch with David at david@grassmarketmission.org or phone to arrange to come and see what we do for yourself.

Own a piece of history and support a local non-profit making community enterprise.
