Some time ago, the idea was mooted of having an exhibition in Greyfriars that would begin a process of challenging and enthusing the members and other interested visitors around the subject of homelessness and a Christian response to the issue. Following this concept we approached Julia Fowler, a local artist and member of St. Columba’s, and asked her to paint a number of portraits of service users. Prior to this, Julia had approached me and asked to use the meals at Kirkhouse as a way of meeting homeless people, to ask them to allow her to sketch them for a portfolio she was constructing for a project of her own.
Julia agreed to paint a number of new portraits as well as including some that she had done previously to bring the number of paintings to be included in the exhibition to eight. As well as the paintings, the exhibition will contain several short stories or ideas that we have contributed. Some of these are experiences we have had or things we have seen which will hopefully begin to make people see the service users at Kirkhouse in a different way.
This exhibition will be in Greyfriars until the end of October, ensuring that many people will see it and will be impacted by what it says.
